Learning Design

Explore a new way of learning

At Apogee Cedar Park, our children learn in a collaborative studio of multi-age learners. Our flexible approach challenges each student with their own differentiated learning plan and inspires them through real-world projects and experiences.

Our Learner Driven Community puts children at the center of their learning, allowing them to create and maintain personal goals and relational covenants, as they Learn to Learn, Learn to Do, and Learn to Be.

1. Core Academic Skills

"Learn to Know"

Master the foundations of reading, writing, and math

2. Quests & Projects

"Learn to Do"

Master the skills needed to solve real-world problems.

Example:

Deliver a speech in the shoes of Winston Churchill

Planning a booth in the Children’s Business fair

3. Socratic Discussions

"Learn to Learn"

Guides responding to students’ questions with new questions

Example:

Socratic Discussions hone critical thinking and speaking abilities

Students rigorously analyze questions and facts to think and speak with clarity

4. Servant Leadership

"Learn to Be"

Learn to value the power of a community centered on respect, integrity and collaboration

Example:

Servant Leader Badges celebrate character milestones

Relational covenants and real-world consequences transform difficult decisions into virtuous habits

"My kids love going to school everyday because Acton is built to help them find their voice, take charge of their education, and practice collaboration and self management with a fun group of peers that is truly a community."

How is Apogee Cedar Park different?

  • Self-paced learning environment designed to foster responsibility, goal-setting, and teamwork
  • Real life skills by launching a business, playing an instrument, painting a mosaic, or programming a robot
  • “Guides” not teachers offer insightful questions and use the Socratic method to hones students’ critical thinking
  • Students leadand own their education; thinking independently, taking responsibility and embracing challenges
  • Holistic development focused on personal virtues such as honesty, hard work, responsibility, kindness and empathy
"I would never have believed children could learn so much from each other – until I saw it with my own eyes. The lessons of self management and self governance have prepared our fifth grade son to be a lifelong learner.”

The Hero's Journey

Learning at Apogee Cedar Park: an Acton Academy is an invitation to a Hero's Journey. We believe that each of us has a special calling in life, and a series of trials and tests that must be faced with integrity and purpose, in order to live a life of meaning. Our mission is to prepare everyone his or her special journey.

"The thought of a learning environment that incorporates active learning, includes all the senses, and emphasizes a pursuit personalized to your individual gifts, sounds amazing. What kid doesn't deserve that?"

Outcomes

  • Mastery of Core Academic Skills While standardized tests are the least interesting measurements of the learning that is happening in our studios every day, on average and in comparison to national standards, the Elementary School students at Acton have moved up 2.5 grade levels per year in Reading, Writing and Math.
  • A Love Of Learning There's an essential starting point for any Acton and it’s a simple belief: Every child is a genius. This belief infuses a sense of identity to each learner. For us, genius is about uniqueness. It’s about the creative potential lying within each human which will waste away if not recognized and honed over time, with rigor. How does this belief play out each day? It shows up as an exquisite respect for children – their work, abilities and power. We trust children to do hard things. And they step up, fueled by the desire to achieve their potential.
  • Self-Management And Leadership Acton students are responsible for managing their time and schedule according to their top priorities. They earn more freedoms over time through hard work, achieving their own S.M.A.R.T goals and helping to uphold the standards of excellence in their community.
  • Happier Families Through Acton's Family Plans and the Hero's Journey Framework, parents and their children work together to achieve their goals and support each other.
